The Lost Sisters
Two states had competing Union and Confederate governments throughout the war. Each sent sizeable forces to serve in Confederate armies, but neither ever succeeded in wresting sovereignty from the Federal government. The Confederacy recognized both sister states and placed stars in the National Flag to honor them.
