Kearney Park, Fresno This coming weekend, October 10 & 11 will mark the last official event of the year. It will be held at Kearney Park in Fresno. To get there take Hwy. 99 south to Fresno. Then take the Fresno St. off ramp and take a right on Kearney Blvd. Just follow Kearney Blvd. to Keaney Park. For parking take a left just before the Park. This is the biggest event of the year Col. Frazier is expecting to make 3 divisions. The 14th will be the Color Company as usual and the 5th Texas will be in our division with us. We really need to make a good showing at this event. You can start showing up anytime after 12:00 Noon Friday. Cpl. Dave Lund will be there early so help him set up camp if you arrive early also. There is a Lyceum planned for Saturday night and also 1st. Sgt. Perry may have made free dinner plans for us also. This is an event you should all show up for, hope to see you all there. "I am tired of being ordered around by every little squirt of a 2nd Lieut who can work around and get himself elected by a Company of backwards soldiers....There are plenty of officers in our Brigade and Army who are perfect numbskulls." Sgt Maj J. Mark Smither, 5th Texas, letter to his uncle, 24 July 1864, Smither Papers, Confederate Research Center, Hill Junior College, Hillsboro, TexasHere Ye!, Here Ye! Fellow Possums, I am throwing my hat in for the position of Company Commander for next year. I am not going to give you a huge history of everything I have done in the past but rather tell you what I want to do in the future. 1st: Open the lines of communication. we have had a lack of communication this past year. Through the Palmyra Post I will let you all be kept up to date. I will also respond to your inquiries and will be in contact with all my NCO's prior to events as well as the Battalion Staff. My NCO's will be in contact with you before each event. I also want to listen to to what you have to say. 2nd: Build up attendance. This requires your help in showing up to events. I alson want to get members the have drifted off back into the fold. In addition I want to recruit new members and have a system in place that they are well informed as to what they need and bring them along in the unit. |
Orders of the Day Fellow Possums, I have been asked by Lt. Dennis Henderson to assume command of the 14th at Kearney Park. I agreed to do this as long as all duly elected NCO's are in agreement since they are the ones that should assume command in the absence of the actual commander. If any NCO would like to command contact me or otherwise I will assume command in Fresno. Needless to say the 14th has gone to s--- this past year. We have the largest event of the year coming up this weekend and we need all members to show up. Our attendance at Murphy's was pathetic with only nine members showing up. Kearney Park will have re-enactors from all over the state coming and Bobby Lloyd is planning on forming 3-4 divisions. We need to be an autonomous unit in Fresno. We can not count on anyone from other units to help fill the ranks, so please make every effort to show up. As usual if you need a ride please contact an NCO or me. We are also holding elections and you need to be present to vote. If you want any say in how the 14th will be run next year you must show up. Your obedient servant, Acting 2nd Lt. Dave Partak
3rd: Drill. We have slipped a little in out drill efficiency. I don't want to constantly be drilling, but enough to make us look good on the field. The bayonet drill that was instituted by 2nd Sgt. Tom Culross was great and I want to build on that. I also want to go back to skirmish drill and finish up the planned hand to hand with the U.S. mounted cavalry we were going to do. 4th: Fun. The 14th is a group of rebels amongst rebels. We have always liked to do things our way and have been a cut above everyone else. Since we are very individualistic I the 14th, we as a unit have to be flexible. We can not expect every body to be a die hard. This not to say we should have goals as a unit, but if we expect to grow we have to bring members along a bit at a time. Remember most of us were raging farbs at one time or another. I want to continue our growth and our authenticity with in the realistic expectations of each individual member. I hope 1999 will be a better year for the 14th and I will do what I can to make it better. Dave Partak
