. . . Tom was a favorite with the whole regiment and all concur in saying that he was the best soldier in the regiment. There can be said more for him than can be said for one in ten thousand. He has never missed a roll call, a drill, a tour of duty, never been absent a day without leave, never reported to a surgeon nor has he ever slept out of camp unless on duty. The loss of such men can not be supplied. Tom was strictly moral. I never saw him out of humor in my life. . . (p.150) Tom Culross died a young man. He only turned 49 on June 11th and passed away on the 30th. Tom leaves a wife Debra and two teenage children, Jennifer and Matthew. They will miss both his affection and support. Although the NCWA plans to honor Tom by naming its most recent award The Culross Cross, we members of the 14th Tennessee and Frazier's Legion plan to take up a collection at Murphy's for a fund to present to Tom's family at Fresno. If ever you wanted to repay the generosity of another member for his time, commitment and support, you now have the opportunity. Contact Lt. Kermit Claytor of the Confederate battalion staff to make a contribution or donate directly to the fund at Murphy's. Tom Culross 1950-1949 |
